How to Style and Care for Different Hair Types

Whether your hair is curly, straight, or naturally voluminous, our team of expert hairstylists at Chilli Couture salon is here to help you achieve your best hair days with organic hair care products, regardless of your hair type.

What does a Hair Type mean?

Knowing your hair type can help you find the right hair care products, styling techniques, and treatments. Hair type refers to the natural characteristics of your hair, such as its texture, curl pattern, thickness, and density. Identifying your hair type will allow you to tailor your hair care routine to your needs.

Understanding Different Hair Types

Here are the most common hair types and their characteristics:

  1. Straight Hair: These hairs are naturally smooth and lack volume. It tends to be more prone to oiliness at the roots.

  1. Wavy Hair: They fall between straight and curly hair. It has a natural wave pattern that adds volume and texture.

  1. Curly Hair: It has a distinct spiral or corkscrew shape and requires extra moisture to prevent frizz.

  1. Coily Hair: This type of hair is tightly curled, often referred to as afro-textured hair. It is prone to dryness and requires special care to maintain its shape and prevent breakage.

How to Determine Your Hair Type

1. Texture: Begin by observing the shape of your hair strands. You likely have straight hair if your strands are straight with no visible bends or curves. If your strands have gentle bends and form an “S” shape, you have wavy hair. You have curly hair if your strands have tight curls and create a spiral or corkscrew shape. And if your strands have very tight curls with a zigzag pattern, you have kinky hair.

2. Thickness: Next, assess the thickness of your hair. Take a strand and hold it between your fingers. If it feels thin and barely noticeable, you have fine hair. If it feels medium in thickness, you have normal hair. And if it feels thick and coarse, you have thick hair.

3. Porosity: Lastly, determine the porosity of your hair, which is the ability to absorb and retain moisture. Take a clean, dry strand of hair and place it in a glass of water. If it sinks quickly, your hair has high porosity, meaning it absorbs moisture easily but also loses it quickly. If it floats in the middle, your hair has normal porosity. And if it floats on top for a while before sinking, your hair has low porosity, indicating it has difficulty absorbing moisture.

Hair Styling Tips for Your Hair Type

  • For straight hair, try adding loose curls using a curling iron or a flat iron. Use a texturising spray to create a tousled, beachy look.
  • If your hair is curly, embrace it and enhance it with a curl-defining cream or mousse. Diffuse your hair or let it air dry for the best results.
  • If it’s wavy hair, then experiment with different hairstyles such as braids or half-up, half-down styles.
  • In case of thick hair, try different updos or ponytail styles that showcase the volume and body of your hair. Use a strong-hold hairspray to keep your style in place.
  • If you have thin hair, consider adding extensions or using volumising products to create the appearance of thicker hair. Experiment with different hairstyles and textures to add volume and dimension.

Hair Care Routines for Different Hair Types

For Straight and Fine Hair:

  • Use a volumising shampoo and conditioner that gives volume and lifts your hair without weighing it down.
  • Washing your hair frequently can strip away natural oils and make your hair appear flat. Aim to wash your hair every other day to maintain a balance.
  • Go for lightweight styling products such as mousses or texturising sprays to add volume and texture to your hair.

For Curly and Frizzy hair

  •  Opt for a sulphate-free shampoo that gently cleanses your hair without stripping away moisture.
  • Use a conditioner particularly formulated for curly hair and leave it on for a few minutes to maximise hydration.
  • After washing your hair, apply leave-in conditioner to lock the moisture and keep your curls hydrated.

For Wavy Hair

  • Wavy hair can tend to be on the drier side, so it’s important to use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to keep it hydrated.
  • To enhance your natural waves, try scrunching your hair when it’s damp. Apply a curl-enhancing product and use your hands to scrunch your hair upwards.
  • Wavy hair doesn’t need to be washed as frequently as straight hair. Try to wash your hair every two to three days to maintain the natural oils and prevent it from becoming dry.

Hair Care Techniques to Make Your Hair Look Healthy, Shiny and Beautiful

1. Regular Washing: Wash your hair regularly with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner suitable for your hair type.

3. Limit Hair Styling: Minimise the usage of heat styling tools like flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers. While using heat styling tools, use heat protectant spray to minimise damage.
