Is it Safe to Treat My Hair Whilst Pregnant or Breastfeeding?

So you’ve just found out you’re pregnant…congratulations!

Along with that pregnancy glow that some (we said some!) expecting mums are blessed with, pregnancy can also work wonders on your hair, with the hormone changes giving it a new-found softness and volume – something you may have already seen in expecting friends, or now, in your own locks.

But sigh, pregnancy can also have the opposite effect on your locks, with some expecting mums suddenly finding themselves with uncharacteristically dry, frizzy hair (keep reading…we can fix that!) and unbeknownst to many, the majority of mums experience extensive hair loss approximately 3 months after childbirth – although we can’t change that, we can certainly work with you to manage your style during this time.

What’s most important though, is the health of you and your bub-to-be, and now as an expecting mum, you may be finding yourself erring on the side of caution regarding everything from the food to eat through to your skincare and hair products.

Suddenly wondering whether hair treatments – colour included – are safe during pregnancy?

Here’s what you need to know.

What’s Really In Your Hair Treatments?

If you rely on a salon to get your hair coloured, straightened, curled, bleached, relaxed or permed, it’s a challenge finding salon treatment products not loaded with chemicals – ones that sound like they should be in cleaning products – like ammonia, sodium hydroxide and guanidine hydroxide…say what?!

Using Hair Colouring While You’re Pregnant

Research on the impact of hair colouring on a pregnancy is lacking and so no hard facts have been established – but as an extra precaution, some women do choose to delay colouring their hair until after the first trimester – after which the risk of harming the developing foetus is much lower.

Thanks to 100% of our hair colours being free from chemicals like ammonia and PPD, this isn’t something you’ll have to worry about at Chilli Couture. You can also opt for off-scalp colours, such as highlights or balayage as an extra precaution.

We also have a range of completely natural colour shaded treatments that are actually classed a food – they are so natural, you can eat them! While these colour treatments don’t cover grey or lighten hair, they are a very safe option for those who want to bypass salon colour completely.

Using Hair Colouring While You’re Breastfeeding

Seeing that only a minimal amount of the components in hair colours or bleaches are absorbed by the body through the skin, the chances of these passing through your breast milk are slim. However, if you are still worried, at Chilli Couture we can provide your locks with organic hair colour, free from chemicals found in typical hair dyes.

Benefits of Using Chemical Free Hair Colour

Use non-abrasive organic and chemical free hair colours and your hair will thank you – before, during and after pregnancy! At Chilli Couture we specialise in these, so you can be assured your hair colour will look fabulous  – we also know how to adjust your treatment according to the changes pregnancy has made to your hair to keep it or get it back to tip-top shape.
